The Role of School Bulletin Boards in Enhancing Visual Literacy Among Students
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the role of school bulletin boards (mading) in enhancing visual literacy among students at SDI Utaseko. The school bulletin board is a simple and interactive mass communication medium. The research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, with the research subjects being all students of SDI Utaseko. The findings reveal that school bulletin boards can improve visual literacy in several ways: 1) Enhancing creativity: Bulletin boards allow students to create their own content, such as drawings, illustrations, or infographics, fostering creativity and reading interest; 2) Building a literacy culture: Bulletin boards serve as a platform for students to express their ideas and creativity in written form, thus cultivating a literacy culture within the school; 3) Improving reading and writing skills: Bulletin boards are used as a medium to improve students' reading and writing abilities, as well as to establish reading habits; and 4) Developing critical reading skills: Bulletin boards encourage students to think critically about the ideas and information presented, thereby enhancing their critical thinking abilities. This study shows that school bulletin boards play a significant role in improving visual literacy among students at SDI Utaseko. Therefore, bulletin boards are recognized as an effective strategy for enhancing students' visual literacy skills.
